VS-35 - Blue Wolves:


Sea Control Squadron THREE FIVE as originally established as the Airborne Anti-Submarine THREE FIVE "Boomerangers" on 3 January 1961 at NAS Los Alimitos, CA flying the S-2F "Tracker".  The Boomerangers relocated to NAS North Island in 1962 and made their first deployment aboard USS HORNET (CVS-12).  Three more deployments aboard USS HORNET between 1965 and 1969 saw combat action in the Gulf of Tonkin, as well as assisting in the recovery of the first Apollo space capsule in 1966.  In 1972 VS-35 deployed aboard USS TICONDEROGA (CVS-14) and participated in the mining of Haiphong Harbor in North Vietnam.  In conjunction with the drawdown of the S-2, VS-35 was disestablished June 30, 1977.  In October 1976, VS-35 reestablished only to be disestablished again on March 30 1977.  On March 3, 1987, VS-35 was reestablished, but only to be disestablished on September 30, 1988.  VS-35 was reestablished for the last time on October 3, 1990 as the "Blue Wolves" flying the S-3A "Viking" aboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70) when Commander D.G. Heine assumed the duties of Officer-In-Charge. The official re-establishment occurred on 04 April 1991.  In December 1992 the squadron transitioned to the S-3B.  On February 17, 1994, VS-35 deployed for the first time since 1972 aboard USS CARL VINSON  in support of Operation SOUTHER WATCH.  VS-35 returned to the Gulf aboard USS CARL VINSON in 1996 and aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN-72) in 1998 and 2000.  The 1998 deployment proved highly successful for VS-35 with the command being awarded its second consecutive SEACONWINGPAC Commodore's Cup for weapon's excellence, the Arnold J. Isbell Trophy for ASW excellence, the SEACONWINGPAC Golden Wrench award, the CVW-14 and CINCPACFLT Golden Anchor awards, and the 1998 COMNAVAIRPAC Battle Efficiency (Battle "E") award. During their 2000 deployment they were the first Pacific Fleet squadron to deploy with the Surveillance System Upgrade (SSU) aircraft.  VS-35 deployed in July 2002 in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and SOUTHERN WATCH.  During their return trip home, they were recalled to the Gulf in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, resulting in a 10-month "War Cruise".  President George W. Bush flew aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN on May 1, 2003 in a VS-35 aircraft designated NAVY ONE.  VS-35 returned from their final deployment aboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN-74) in November 2004. 


VS-35 was disestablished March 31, 2005.
